Workshop skills in OpenAI Codex
Codex reads a skills directory the same way Claude Code does — ~/.codex/skills/<name>/SKILL.md — and WorkshopSkill ships in that shape. The whole folder arrives with one curl and an unzip; nothing else to configure.
Install
Codex looks for skills under $CODEX_HOME/skills (default ~/.codex/skills). One bundle per activity; the zip already unpacks to a directory named after the skill.
install two skills into Codex
mkdir -p ~/.codex/skills cd "$(mktemp -d)" curl -LO https://workshopskill.com/en/activities/blind-portrait/files/blind-portrait.zip curl -LO https://workshopskill.com/en/activities/paper-tower/files/paper-tower.zip unzip -o '*.zip' mv blind-portrait paper-tower ~/.codex/skills/
Point AGENTS.md at the drawer (optional)
If you prep workshops from a dedicated folder, add one line to its AGENTS.md so every Codex session knows the drawer exists — the skills load automatically, this line just tells the agent where the folders live on disk:
AGENTS.md
# workshop prep Skill folders live in ~/.codex/skills/. When asked to prep an activity, load the matching skill and run its commands as printed. Index: https://workshopskill.com/en/skills.json
First run
Ask in terms the frontmatter matches on — category, group size, minutes:
a terminal exchange
> I have 90 minutes with 15 people, no projector. Prep me. Codex filters skills.json / installed skills, proposes: opener: two-truths (15 min, assessment-type) core: paper-tower (30 min, teams of 3-5) close: exit-ticket (3 min, tool-type — no account needed) then runs each skill's curl steps and prints the shopping list from the props field.
Troubleshooting
- Too many skills to scan? Keep only the categories you run; the rest stay one curl away via skills.html.
- Sandbox blocks network? The curl steps are downloads: allow them, or run the curls yourself and hand Codex the directory.
- Headless FormLM login? Covered by the fallback note inside every assessment-type SKILL.md.

questions
Which Codex version added skills?
Skills support landed in the 2025 Codex CLI line; if your build has no skills directory, the paste-and-run tutorial works everywhere.
Can Codex pick several skills for one session?
Yes — that is the intended use: the brief (headcount, minutes, setting) resolves against every installed skill's frontmatter at once.
Do installs phone home?
No. curl to workshopskill.com is a static file download — no analytics on that request, no account, no key.
